Let Your Yoga Dance FAQ:
Do I need a yoga mat?
Not necessarily. If you know that you like to stretch out on the floor, you’re welcome to have a mat or blanket on hand. Some people dance in bare feet, some wear soft shoes, some wear supportive shoes. When you’re at home via Zoom, it’s pretty easy for you to change up your footwear or any other props between songs.
Do I need to know yoga poses?
No! I’ll remind you that Let Your Yoga Dance is about joy & fun — we get to PLAY with movement. Sometimes, we do some flowing Yoga poses as part of our dancing, but you don’t need to know anything about yoga! You don’t need to know the name of the pose or how to do it in advance. All you really need is an open mind and an openness to follow the instructions you’re hearing and/or seeing. You can’t do anything wrong!
Do I need to know dance moves? What if I’m not coordinated?
No!!!! There’s sometimes a little bit of “choreography” in Let Your Yoga Dance — it’s meant to help us feel connected. Also, it’s excellent for our Brain Health to TRY to coordinate movements in our body (aka choreography) — and even better news: You get the benefits in your brain and body just by attempting the choreography. But the result doesn’t matter at all. It doesn’t matter for your brain health or body health. And it doesn’t matter to Janie Ganga or your fellow dancers! Since we all can’t do anything wrong, the choreography is just for fun!!!!
MOST of Let Your Yoga Dance involves suggestions and guidance that aren’t traditional dance moves at all.
Will I be jumping around for a whole hour?
No. The songs start off slower, get faster toward the middle, and end on a slower pace again. We always take some time to connect inward before we close a session.
What if I don’t like the music?
Many of us have strong associations around some kinds of music. I will say from my own experience, even when I have danced to songs that I “don’t like,” in Yoga Dance, I’ve been able to have a very different experience with the music. I invite you to relax and try it out and see how it goes for you!
What if I DO like the music? Who’s that artist?
Janie Ganga will email you a list of the songs and artists after each Let Your Yoga Dance.
What if I want to dance in my own way?
Awesome!!!! It’s YOUR yoga, YOUR dance, YOUR body, YOUR inspiration. Janie Ganga and your fellow dancers will enjoy, support, and be inspired by your own free dance at any point! ENJOY!
What are the Chakras? Why is this “yoga” dance?
Great question! The Chakras are one of the ways the yogis described the energy system in our body. The reason this is Yoga Dance is because we are consciously moving energy through these systems. There’s tons to explore about the Chakras!!!!! For now, here’s some quick info:
1st Chakra - Root - earth, feet & legs, grounding
2nd Chakra - Sacrum - water, hips & belly, creativity
3rd Chakra - Solar Plexus - fire, lungs & heart, power
4th Chakra - Heart - air, heart & arms, compassion & community
5th Chakra - Throat - sound, voice & truth, expression
6th Chakra - Third Eye - ether/air, inner knowing, intuition
7th Chakra - Crown - space, wisdom, connection in all directions
